Publishing careers

Equality and diversity

The stereotype has been that publishing is made up predominantly of white, middle-class Oxbridge graduates with English degrees.

While there has, in the past, been more than a grain of truth in this, many publishers are now actively seeking to broaden their intake. Some are working with the recently formed Diversity in Publishing Network to improve the representation of minority ethnic groups in publishing.

As far as gender goes, publishing is an extremely popular career choice for women. At one time, the perception was that there was something of a glass ceiling in respect of senior positions (with some notable exceptions). However, this has been changing dramatically and there are now a number of women in the very top publishing jobs.
