Most entry level positions in publishing require a degree level qualification. The subject doesn't normally matter, although there are, for obvious reasons, a lot of English graduates in publishing. There are some universities that offer publishing degrees, but the extent to which they help you find a job is still hotly debated. Some academic publishers require their editorial staff to be qualified in the subject in which they publish, and some of these editors may be even have PhDs in their fields.
What employers are really looking for is a demonstrable interest in publishing: something that sets you apart from other graduates.
Often, work experience will help.
Some see the practice of giving unpaid work to students or recent graduates as exploitation. However, as long as there are companies offering it and people willing to do it, it will remain one of the best ways to get a foot in the door. Many large publishers offer organised work experience schemes and internships. If you are a student hoping to get into publishing, they are definitely worth exploring.
Work experience can be hard to secure and is not financially viable for everyone. But there are other things you can do. If you are a student, get involved in any publishing-related activities at university – is there a student newsletter, for example? Or even a book group?
Outside of university, there are many membership organisations focused on publishing. Some are open only to people already working in the industry, but others, such as the Society of Young Publishers (www.thesyp.org.uk), also welcome aspiring publishers. This provides an invaluable networking opportunity and also gives you something extra to add to your CV!
