Publishing careers

Finding jobs

You can find entry level publishing vacancies in many of the places you would look for any other job, on general recruitment websites and websites/magazines for recent graduates. You should also look in newspapers with good publishing/media sections, such as Monday's Guardian, and on the associated websites.

You may also see vacancies advertised in the Bookseller (www.thebookseller.com) and on the SYP website (www.thesyp.org.uk – although you will need to join before you can see full details).

You will notice that many of the roles you see advertised are placed through a number of publishing-specific recruitment agencies. These agencies may well be worth approaching, but they sometimes require you to have experience before they will add you to their books.

If you know which publishers you want to work for, keep checking their websites. You may find vacancies posted there before they start appearing in other media, allowing you to get your application in early.

Finally, a few publishers run graduate training schemes, but there are not that many of them, so competition will be fierce. However, they offer some excellent opportunities for successful candidates, so they are definitely worth looking into.
