Introduction

Book publishing in the UK is huge. There are more than 100,000 new titles each year, with exports going all over the world.

Publishing, then, is one of the UK's great success stories. This country has a strong literary tradition, which increasingly reflects its diverse cultural heritage. This is partly down to the popularity of the English language, which is itself remarkably diverse and expressive. But books that were originally written in English and published in the UK still find themselves translated into hundreds of other languages and distributed worldwide.

It is also an exciting time to be involved in publishing, with technologies such as e-books and print on demand (cost-effective printing of a very small number of titles) starting to have an impact.

Small wonder, then, that publishing remains an incredibly popular career choice, especially among graduates. It's easy to understand the desire to be involved in a creative process and to play a part in producing a work of art, which you may eventually get to see on the shelves of your local bookshop.
