Proofreading is the process of checking that a document as laid out for print is what has been asked for by the author and editor.
The proofreader is responsible for the final checks before a publication is printed. Proofreading is not editing, although the two disciplines are related. A good understanding of where the proofreader’s role sits in the editorial process is vital and this is one of the skills you will develop as you work through Proofreading Today.
Being a proofreader is not easy. The work demands high levels of concentration, a professional approach and an untiring eye for detail.
You also need an understanding of the publishing process, knowledge of how to mark corrections and a firm grasp of language, grammar, spelling and punctuation.
This course will help you gain the knowledge, skills and judgement you will need.
Book publishers, magazine publishers, information companies, government agencies, charities, academic institutions and other organisations use freelance proofreaders. It takes persistence and professionalism to establish yourself as a freelance, but those that manage it value the independence to work where they like, in their own time and as their own boss.
To build a proofreading career you will need to show you have the relevant skills, knowledge and professional attitude to make it worthwhile for a publisher to employ you.
Not as much as you might think! Proofreading Today costs just £295 and, as the newest course of its type, we believe it represents excellent value.
We understand that the financial burden of vocational training can be an obstacle. Therefore, we have developed a flexible pay as you learn scheme, whereby you pay £95 for Module 1 and then £50 for each of the subsequent modules. Under this scheme, once you have paid for one module, you are under no obligation to enrol on the next one. See our enrolment page for full details.
Typically the course takes between six and twelve months to complete. It’s possible to complete the exercises more quickly than this, but we find most of our students enjoy the flexibility that distance learning brings: learning at their own pace, and fitting in the study around their work, family and other commitments.
We have published the introductory module of Proofreading Today on this website absolutely free, to ensure that people understand exactly what the course entails prior to enrolling.
If you enrol on the course, you have a full 30-day period in which to review the course materials. If during that time you decide the course is not for you simply return the materials, in good condition, before the 30 days are up and we will refund any fees paid in full.
On successful completion of the course you will be awarded a certificate of completion.
This will help to demonstrate to clients and employers that you have reached a certain standard and that you can deal with proofs supplied in electronic format.
You will also be entitled to place an entry in our directory of freelancers.
We offer tutor support to all trainees via email. Your tutor will provide feedback on your marked assignments and you can address any additional queries to them.
